Scottish Child Law Centre

The Scottish Child Law Centre (SCLC) provides free legal advice by telephone or email on all aspects of Scots law relating to children and young people. This is a national service, available to anyone in Scotland or where Scots law has jurisdiction.

SCLC can advise on parental responsibilities and rights, residence, contact, children’s rights, youth offenders, education, health, social work and access to files.

If you are under 21 you can call the freephone advice line anytime.  Their dedicated “Youth Hour” is every Tuesday and Thursday between 12 and 1 o’clock, when solicitors only take calls from children and young people.

There is also an advice line for parents, relatives and carers.

One Parent Families Scotland (OFPS) is a charity working with single parent families in Scotland.  OPFS offers face to face support services and advice and information on topics including benefits, money, separation, your home, your children, health and wellbeing and work, training and education.

Clan Childlaw

Clan ChildLaw is a free and confidential legal and advocacy service for children and young people up to the age of 18 or 21 if they have been Looked After. Clan Childlaw can represent  in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Glasgow.

Free information and guidance about children’s rights and the law is available to family members, carers and adults who work with children or young people in Scotland.

Citizens Advice Bureau

Citizens Advice Scotland form Scotland’s largest independent advice network.  Some bureaux have in-court advisors and lay representatives – find your local Citizens Advice Bureau at www.cas.org.uk/bureaux.

The Citizens Advice Bureau is an accredited agency for referrals to the Free Legal Services Unit of the Faculty of Advocates (see below).

Faculty of Advocates

The Free Legal Services Unit (FLSU) was established to provide free legal advice and representation by volunteer advocates for those who cannot afford the legal help they need, and who cannot obtain assistance from any other source. If you are interested in accessing help from the FLSU you will need to consult an accredited agency and meet certain criteria.

Lothian Family Mediation provides help and support to families and children impacted by relationship break down. Family mediators help families in to understand and communicate with each other better so they can make practical plans for the future. Mediation can help minimise conflict, improve family life and help avoid court action.

When you contact the service you will be told whether you will be asked for a donation or if they have a set charge. You may be asked to make a contribution towards the cost of your case if you cannot afford the full amount.  In some cases you may be able to claim Legal Aid.

The University of Edinburgh Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC)

The Free Legal Advice Centre delivers pro bono legal services to members of the public living in and around the Edinburgh area who, for whatever reason, cannot access legal advice elsewhere. Student advisers, members of staff and qualified solicitors work together to offer advice on legal problems.

FLAC can provide advice and assistance on the following: company and commerical,  contract, disputes, employment, family, property, intellectual property, landlord and tenant, willis and inheritance and personal injury.
